Polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate is a whole new ballgame! Regular polished concrete is a pretty straight forward job for us. When you start talking polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate, there are a few more things to consider.
This particular slab with polish concrete floors and exposed aggregate was completed in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The first thing we consider when creating an exposed aggregate floor is the age. Newer concrete has a tendency to be a little harder, so it could take longer to expose the proper amount of aggregate. Newer concrete is anywhere from 3 months to 10 years. Depending on the original PSI of the concrete, it could be extremely hard.
There are lots of options when it comes to exposing aggregate for polished concrete floors. We can grind the floor wet. We can use extremely aggressive diamonds during the initial grind. We can even use chemicals to help soften the concrete before we even put a grinder on it.
This particular slab was much easier than any of those options. We waited for 4 days after the slab was poured and then we went to work. The concrete was just hard enough to create the perfect exposed aggregate polished concrete.
If we had waited for the full 28-day cure, the house would have been fully framed and the amount of work required to obtain such a beautiful exposed aggregate polish would have increased enormously.
Once the slab was completely polished, we had a pretty awesome surprise waiting for us after dark. We’ll explain more in a different post.
