What is Exposed Aggregate Polished Concrete?

Exposed aggregate polished concrete (just like a normal polished concrete floor) is very similar to sanding wood. We use large machines to mechanically grind and reveal the aggregate in a concrete floor. Once the level of aggregate desired is achieved, the floor can then be turned into honed, and eventually polished concrete. Just like wood, our machines can polish a concrete floor to a specified level of shine.

While most concrete floors need to sit for 28 days (ASTM Standard) before polishing, an exposed aggregate floor may begin wihin 7 days of the original pour.

The only reason for starting the polished concrete process sooner than the recommended ASTM standard is if the polish is going to expose aggregate. We recommend initial grinding within the first 7 days if exposed aggregate polished concrete is desired.

The benefit to starting before 28 days is the polishers ability to expose the aggregate evenly throughout the floor. It’s a necessity.

There are 3 classes of exposed aggregate floors.

[custom_list style=”list-11″]

  • Class 1 Cement Fines – 5-15% Fine Aggregate and 85-95 Cement Fines
  • Class 2 Fine Aggregate – 85-95 % Fine Aggregate 5-15 % Blend of Cement Fines and Coarse Aggregate
  • Class 3 Course Aggregate – 80-90 % Coarse Aggregate 10-20 % Blend of Cement Fines and Fine Aggregate

Aggregate exposure class denotes the surface exposure after grinding and polishing the floor. The density, size and distribution of the aggregates at the surface depends on the concrete mix design and placing and finishing. Floor flatness at the time of grinding and polishing is an important consideration in selecting the appropriate aggregate exposure class.

Surface exposure percentages are based on visual observation of the overall area of the polished floor[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”benefitsofpolishedconcretefloors”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Benefits of Exposed Aggregate Polished Concrete Floors:

[custom_list style=”list-2″]

  • Uniqueness: Exposed aggregate floors are some of the most unique in the flooring industry.
  • Decorative: Unlike regular polished concrete floors, you have the ability to choose any aggregate you desire before the concrete is poured. As a result, you could have all black aggregate, all-white aggregate or any other type of cement medium.
  • Colors and designs: Exposed aggregate concrete can still be stained just like a regular polished concrete floor. Because of this, an exposed aggregate floor can be designed to match any existing theme.
  • Compared to Terrazzo: You can have the look of terrazzo without the cost of terrazzo. The cost comparison of exposed aggregate to terrazzo is huge. Terrazzo floors can range from $20 to $50 per square foot.
